Bishop College — A Continuing Educational Site

Historical feature • Updated October 12, 2026

Bishop College’s story extended from Marshall to Dallas, Texas. It closed in 1988 after financial difficulties and an unsuccessful bankruptcy restructuring. The Texas Historical Commission records both the institution’s development and the pressures surrounding its closure.

Its former Dallas campus later became home to Paul Quinn College. Bishop and Paul Quinn are distinct institutions; occupying the former campus does not mean Bishop reopened. The continuity is nevertheless significant: a place associated with one HBCU continues serving Black higher education through another.
