Learning Across Institutions
Updated October 12, 2026 • Culture That Defines the HBCU Experience
What the record shows
Virginia State reported in June 2026 that Thomas Patterson became the first student to advance through its collaborative pharmacy pathway with Howard University. The program connects chemistry preparation and prerequisite coursework at VSU with professional pharmacy education at Howard.
Why it matters
This is a form of campus culture that is less visible than a parade but equally important: institutions making an educational path easier to understand and follow. Students encounter a sequence of expectations, mentors and transitions rather than two unrelated admissions decisions.
The achievement is one student’s documented progression, not a guarantee of the same result for every applicant. Its significance lies in showing how a partnership can connect undergraduate learning with professional preparation. That makes academic relationships part of the story of belonging and ambition on campus.
