North Carolina Central: Shepard’s Vision and Durham
Updated October 12, 2026 • Legacy & Greatness • MEAC
What the record shows
James E. Shepard founded the National Religious Training School and Chautauqua in Durham in 1910. NCCU’s heritage account places that beginning within the city’s Black community and identifies the historic Shepard House as a continuing link with its founder.
Why it matters
The institution’s legacy is connected to place. Durham’s educational and community history gives context to a university whose story is larger than one founder but cannot be understood without the vision that helped establish it.
Preserving that connection requires evidence as well as commemoration. Heritage interpretation, institutional records and the campus landscape offer different ways to understand how successive generations carried the school forward. A founder’s name becomes more meaningful when readers can see the educational problem he sought to address.

NCCU’s own heritage account provides the starting point. The feature is historical interpretation, not a claim that the university’s mission has remained unchanged in every detail.
