Campus information that helps students picture the place, the pace, and the possibilities.
Southern University delivers a rich academic and cultural experience with strong traditions and a broad range of professional programs.
Southern University is entering another period of physical and academic development. The university announced plans for new student housing, a change that directly affects the everyday campus experience as Southern works to support students on its Baton Rouge campus. Academically, the university also received approval for a new chemical engineering degree program, adding another pathway within its science and engineering portfolio. Culture remains part of that growth. Southern partnered with local art galleries on a multisite exhibition featuring renowned American artists, connecting campus learning with Baton Rouge’s broader arts community. That kind of collaboration is a reminder that campus life includes the spaces where academics, community and culture overlap. Campus Life Watch: Southern’s traditions are nationally recognizable, but this page will also follow student organizations, academic programs, housing, service and verified Greek chapter activity. The objective is to show what it means to live and learn at Southern now, while still recognizing the traditions that give the university its distinctive identity.
Southern University’s NPHC roster gives the Greek tradition identifiable campus chapters: Beta Sigma Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.; Beta Psi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; Alpha Sigma Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.; Alpha Tau Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; Rho Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.; Beta Alpha Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.; Beta Alpha Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.; and Alpha Eta Chapter of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. The university’s NPHC supports cooperative programming and campus initiatives, including step-show activity. Campus Life will use those named chapters when covering verified events and service.
