Western University — Black Education in Kansas

Historical feature • Updated October 12, 2026

Western University at Quindaro provided educational opportunities beyond the Southern states usually associated with HBCU history. The Kansas Historical Society documents its development, including a music program whose Jubilee Singers gained national recognition.

The university closed in 1943 as state appropriations and private funding declined. Its story broadens our understanding of where Black educational institutions took root and the communities they served. Surviving photographs and historical interpretation connect the present landscape with the institution that once stood there.
